THE ARTIST
Alexey Khvostov was born in Ekaterinburg in 1979. He has been living and working in Saint Petersburg since 2008.
Alexey Khvostov refers to his personal method of art as #contaminism:
In contemporary language, the term contamination refers to combining, blending.
There is contamination in poetry: new poem is made by combination of existing(it was widespreade in Ancient Rome). There is contamination in chemistry: deferent substance mixing and penetrating each other.
Alexey Khvostov’s use existing images such as photos and video stills, even the study of old masters(Lonardo, Bushe, Feshin, Petrov-Vodkin). Alexey make new artwork with new meaning by combining and complementing this images .
The technic is mixed too. Acrylic, oil, marker, bitumen paint on canvas in paintings. Ink, tempera, acrylic, acrylic ground in grafics.
In contemporary linguistics, the term contamination (from latin contamination) refers to combining, blending. Alexey Khvostov’s contaminism processes existing digital images such as photos and video stills, and involves creating digital and artistic collages.
In a series of contaminist graphics the artist is passing an important stage: he is learning from famous masters. That being said, Khvostov is not interested in plain copying: he likes to place the characters of Nikolai Feshin, Francois Boucher, Leonardo da Vinci in an unexpected setting.
The nudity of the models creates a twofold effect: on the one hand, it gives the images the feeling of intimacy and coziness, a sense of utter solitude in which the heroine can permit herself to remain naked; at the same time, such demonstrative showcased nudity reminds us of the absolute public exposure of information on the social network.
